Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading tool provides estimates of how long it will take to read a book, based on its word count and an assumed reading speed. You can adjust the speed to match your own pace.

The catalog also categorizes books by length and reading time, so you can quickly identify titles that fit your schedule. Estimates are approximate and vary by reader.

Reading Time Estimates

Each book shows an estimated reading time in minutes, derived from the median reading speed. For example, a book with 77,000 words is estimated to take about 336 minutes.

Length Categories

Books are classified as short, medium, long, or epic based on word count. This gives a quick sense of the book's size.

Pace Labels

Estimated reading times are grouped into quick, steady, immersive, and marathon. These labels help you choose a book that matches your available time.

Reading Tracker

Planning Progress One Page at a Time

Reading Tracker treats a book as a sequence of pages, not abstract chapters or minutes. You record your current page, set a total page count, and choose a daily page goal. The tracker then estimates how much time remains and how many days it will take to finish.

How the Tracker Works

Progress is stored in pages. When you start a book, the tracker calculates an initial total page count by dividing the word count by 250 words per page and rounding up. That is a default assumption; you can replace it with the total shown by your own reading app or edition, which may differ.

The estimated remaining time is proportional: if you have read half the pages, half the estimated minutes remain. The estimated finish date is simply the number of remaining pages divided by your daily goal, rounded up. No account is needed, and your history stays in the browser's localStorage.

Setting a Realistic Daily Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages. That is a reasonable starting point for many readers, but you can adjust it to match your schedule. If you know you have a busy week, a lower goal may keep you on track without pressure. If you have a free weekend, a higher goal could help you finish sooner.

The tracker does not record sections or minutes as progress. It is deliberately simple, focusing on the page as the unit you actually see in your book. That makes it easy to update and easy to see how far you have come.

A Concrete Example

Three in Norway, by Two of Them — Edition Insights has about 81,841 words. Using the default 250 words per page, that gives roughly 328 pages. If you set a daily goal of 20 pages, the tracker estimates about 17 days to finish. If you have a longer reading session and set the goal to 40 pages, that drops to about 9 days.

These numbers are estimates. Your actual pace will depend on how much time you set aside and how quickly you read. The value of the tracker is that it turns a vague intention into a concrete plan.

Adjusting for Your Edition

The page count in a physical book or e-reader may not match the default estimate. If your edition has different pagination, you can update the total page count to reflect your copy. The tracker will then use that number for all calculations.

This flexibility makes the tracker useful across different formats, For readers who are reading a scanned edition on a screen or a printed volume.
