About In Motion

In Motion is our transformational 18-month artist development programme for original creators who are committed to challenging and evolving their practice and are ready to invest time, attention and energy in where it could go next. It is the UK’s only long-form, holistic and bespoke programme designed specifically around each artist’s creative ambitions.

We support up to 10 creators to design and embark on the next chapter of their creative and professional journey, providing the space, personalised support, funding, networks and skills development to realise their ambitions.

Our alumni go on to make significant contributions across the musical ecology and the Sound and Music-funded projects continue to evolve for years. The end of our programme often marks the beginning of a new trajectory for the works and a new identity, ambition and era for the creators.

In Motion is made possible with the generous support of Arts Council England, PRS Foundation and Creative Scotland.

Applications open: Monday 5 October 2026
Applications close: Monday 2 November 2026

An artist development programme built around you

There is no single route through In Motion— and no predetermined version of what success should look like.

Built on our 18 years of artist-development learning and expertise, In Motion is genuinely artist-centred. The programme responds to the needs, strengths and ambitions of each creator, giving artists the time and support to reflect deeply on their practice, take creative risks, explore new possibilities and make positive and lasting changes in their work.

You might want to deepen an existing area of your practice or explore something completely new. You might bring together previously separate strands of your work, collaborate across disciplines, engage audiences and communities differently, or rethink what a sustainable and fulfilling creative practice means to you.

What matters is that you are ready to explore where your practice could go next.

“New music has never mattered more than it does right now. When so much of what we see and hear is starting to look the same, mass-produced at scale, the artists making something genuinely new deserve more support than ever, not less. That’s what drew me to Sound and Music: the chance to give emerging musicians opportunities that simply didn’t exist before.”

— Owen Shiers, In Motion 2024

What does In Motion offer?

Running from 1 April 2027 to 31 October 2028, In Motion combines financial support with sustained, personalised artist development.

Each creator will receive:

  • an artist bursary of £1,800
  • a production grant of up to £4,000 to support artistic or project development
  • regular one-to-one support from a dedicated Creative Programme Leader
  • sessions with an accredited coach
  • a budget for mentoring
  • group sharing, workshops and two-day Networking Days with the wider cohort.

The programme begins with a six-month Discovery Phase, creating dedicated space to reflect on your practice, explore ideas, identify your strengths and ambitions and develop the relationships and plans that will support what comes next.

This is followed by a 12-month Activity Phase, when you put those plans into action and develop a new creative project with a public-facing outcome.

That outcome could be an EP, installation, event, educational resource, community workshop, work-in-progress sharing or proof of concept — or something else entirely. The important thing is that it connects directly to your development as an artist.

“This has been a beautifully unforgettable journey. The journey of developing this work helped me to deeply and fearlessly dive into my curiosity. It gave me the opportunity to research, gain knowledge, challenge my capacity to shape my imaginative world into reality.”

— Chihiro Ono, In Motion 2024

Who are we looking for?

We want to hear from UK-based music creators working in any genre or discipline.

Artists join In Motion at different stages of their careers. There is no single type of creator we are looking for.

You might work between genres or disciplines. You might be developing a new strand of your practice, building your own creative pathways, contributing to a scene or community, or exploring new ways for people to encounter your work.

We are particularly interested in creators who are:

  • curious, self-directed and willing to reflect critically on their practice
  • open to experimentation and taking creative risks
  • capable of taking initiative in their own development
  • actively creating opportunities, connections or contexts for their work
  • ready to engage fully with an 18-month process of exploration, reflection and growth.

In Motion isn’t simply project funding.

We’re looking for artists who are ready to make use of the time, relationships, challenge and support the programme provides — and who are curious about what might become possible as a result.

“In Motion came at the perfect time for me, it gave me the focus and validation. Latent Spaces was the first time I had made a solo installation — I was really proud of the piece. It has opened up the world of composing in spatial audio.”

— SONAMB, In Motion 2024
